O zero e o infinito
Arthur Koestler (1905-1983) escreveu O Zero e o Infinito (Darkness at Noon) em 1941, narrando as reflexões do fictício preso político Rubachov, um velho militante bolchevique massacrado pelo regime stalinista durante o Grande Expurgo na União Soviética. O livro foi uma tremenda inspiração para George Orwell que escreveu sobre ele e o autor um ensaio em 1944 muito interessante: clique no link para ler
O livro jamais foi levado ao cinema. Faz parte dos “missing movies”, como afirmou Kenneth Lloyd Billingsley (2000) num ensaio sub-intitulado “Why American films have ignored life under communism”: clique no link para ler
Um esboço de verbete da Wikipedia explica que “comunistas americanos e europeus consideraram O Zero e o Infinito como anti-estalinista e anti-URSS. Na década de 1940, vários roteiristas de Hollywood ainda eram comunistas, geralmente foram atraídos para o partido durante as crises econômicas e sociais da década de 1930… e esses comunistas consideraram o romance de Koestler importante o suficiente para evitar a sua adaptação para o cinema”.
O livro relata as reflexões do preso político e o processo que o conduz à morte. O crítico João Pereira Coutinho observa que “o prisioneiro de O Zero e o Infinito começou por acreditar na revolução e foi um dos mais importantes dirigentes bolcheviques, até o dia em que deixou de usar a primeira pessoa do plural – “nós, o partido”; “nós, o Estado”; “nós, o povo” – e começou a escutar a primeira pessoa do singular: o solitário e insubornável “eu”. O primeiro grande crime de Rubashov é, literalmente, um crime gramatical. Mas é mais do que isso: é um crime religioso.
